Sports drinks and electrolyte replacement products are often very acidic (they typically have pH levels from 2.0 to 4.2 as supplied and mixed) and can contribute to low-grade acidosis in competitive athletes.

All Acid Zapper ingredients are allowed by the United States Anti-Doping Agency and are Generally Regarded as Safe (GRAS) by the FDA. Acid Zapper's active ingredient Alka-Plex was recently granted New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) recognition by the FDA. NDI is a safety and product uniformity component of the FDA's regulation of the dietary supplement industry.

The active ingredient in Acid Zapper is Alka-Plex®, a potassium-based strong alkalizer that is combined with a calcium-based weak alkalizer. Inactive ingredients include Microcrystalline Cellulose, Cellulose Gum and Magnesium Stearate. Alka-Plex has been tested for safety and has shown no negative side effects after 10 years of regular usage. However, some antibiotics taken within an hour of using this product may be rendered less effective.
