What is enteric coating, and why is it needed? Why is BPPS such an Advantage over other processes?
Enteric coating is a layer of protective coating for dietary supplements that is meant to allow the supplement to bypass digestion by the stomach and be absorbed in the small intestine. Systemic enzymes are proteins, so their functional structures are denatured (or destroyed) in conditions of extreme pH and temperature. Without enteric coating, enzymes would be rendered useless long before they reach the bloodstream, where their carry out their beneficial effects. There are several systemic enzyme products on the market today that do not use enteric coating at all and very few that use the most Advanced Delivery System called BPPS®. Activity vs. Milligrams

Blends of Systemic Enzymes
Although each enzyme has its own specific function in the body, they tend to work synergistically when taken in combination. Because of their variety of origins and substrates, wide ranges of optimal temperatures and pH levels, increased percentage of absorption, and increased level of effectiveness, enzyme blends have a wider range of advantages than do individual enzymes. Enteric coated Serrapeptase and Nattokinase
All enzymes have a pH range. At the extremes of this range, whether acid or alkaline, systemic enzymes will denature (become irreversibly inactive). While it is true that most fungal and plant source systemic enzymes exhibit a fairly broad pH range, some bacterial sourced systemic enzymes are less tolerant of low pH. Because we work with the actual manufacturer of our enzymes, they are tested for both pH and temperature stability. Based on the results of these kinetic studies, we have repeatedly demonstrated that serrapeptase is much less tolerant of a low pH and will begin to lose activity in acidic conditions consistent with the stomach. Therefore, for maximum effectiveness, serrapeptase is most effective when enterically coated.
Because of our manufacturing process with systemic enzyme blend for human consumption, we have to ensure that it will tolerate the pH variables of our gastrointestinal system. Plant-based and Microbial Enzymes vs. Animal-based Enzymes
Systemic enzymes can be extracted from plant, microbial, and animal sources. Plant-based enzymes are active in a broad range of pH, which means they remain stable throughout the intestinal tract. Most enzyme supplements are extracted from natural fermentation of microbes such as bacteria, which have a narrower optimal pH range that is maintained by enteric coating. Microbial enzymes are more practical to produce and the enzyme content is easier to control. These enzymes are suited for vegetarians and do not interfere with the natural functioning of the body and therefore have no side effects. In contrast, animal-based enzymes work only in a narrow range of pH and can easily be destroyed by stomach acid.
Capsule vs. Tablet
Enzymes in capsule form are more available to the body than tablets. Tablets often have binding agents and a protective coating that make it difficult for the body to absorb the enzymes. Also, the processing techniques used to make tablets require extreme pressure to compress the ingredients, creating friction and high temperatures that can destroy the enzymes rendering them useless to the body. Capsules are created under much milder conditions allowing the enzymes to stay intact and remain available to the body.
