Spotlight on an Ingredient: Serrapeptase

Serrapeptase—also known as serratiopeptidase—is an enzyme belonging to the serine protease class.  As a protease, it breaks down proteins into smaller components called amino acids. Serrapeptase was originally discovered in the digestive tract of silkworms in the 1960s.  It is often called the “butterfly enzyme” because its strong fibrinolytic activity enabled the silkworm to dissolve its tough, fibrous cocoon when it was ready to emerge.  This same fibrinolytic activity was identified to support human inflammatory systems, and has been consumed by humans for decades.

Why Take Fibrinolytic Enzymes?

Imagine you scrape your knee – your blood immediately clots and your body makes a scaffolding out of fibrin (a thread-like protein) to hold the clot in place. This acts as a natural bandage as the body heals. Your body uses fibrin to repair internal injuries too.

But your body also has to take down the fibrin scaffolding (a process called fibrinolysis). Your body naturally does this with an enzyme called plasmin, which breaks down the fibrin into parts the body can process. Healthy fibrinolysis is critical for to manage pain, scarring and potential blood clots.

Fibrinolytic enzymes are proteases that break down the tough strings of fibrin protein. Supplementing with fibrinolytic enzymes can help your body maintain healthy fibrin metabolism.*

What is Enzyme Activity?

What is Enzyme Activity?

Unlike other supplements, the weight (mg) of an enzyme supplement carries little significance. It is not the weight of the enzyme, but the potency (or activity) of the enzyme that matters. Frequently, there are internationally recognized tests such as those of the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) or the United States Pharmacopeia (USP).  In the case of serrapeptase, there is no one international standard for measurement.  Nevertheless, the units you may encounter on the market (SPU, IU, and SU) are used almost interchangeably.  This means you should be able to compare one product to the other regardless of their method of testing.

But remember, activity is not everything! There are other properties of the enzyme, including enteric coating, quality, and purity, which every buyer should evaluate closely before choosing a product. Our pure, high-potency serrapeptase is designed to achieve the maximum activity.*

How Enteric Coating Makes Our Product Uniquely Effective

How Enteric Coating Makes Our Product Uniquely Effective

Your stomach is naturally acidic to help digest food. But not every supplement can tolerate that acidity. Some enzymes, like serrapeptase or nattokinase, are powerful but delicate. They need a special delivery system that helps protect them from stomach acid. The cutting-edge, pthalate-free, enteric coating in this product maximizes potency through the stomach and delivers it into the small intestine, where it is most needed.

Enteric-coating individual ingredients is complex science. Too often, other brands intentionally confuse their customers into thinking they have a real substitute for enteric coated ingredients. When you look closely, these brands do not enteric-coat their enzymes at all, or blindly enteric-coat everything without paying attention to each enzymes' unique characteristics. Worse still, a lot of brands come up with inexpensive workarounds like delayed release capsules or ineffective subsitutes for serrapeptase and nattokinase. As a science-first company, we chose this brand because it delivers the best enzymes in their best form.*

Very effective

I suffered from sinus problems for years and after taking this for a week, I have no issues anymore. I take a couple times per week now to keep my sinuses clear.

Serrapeptase is working

Have taken this product for about 5-6 weeks. Have seen improvements with regards to arthritis. Varicose veins have started to diminish. Husband's blood pressure has consistently improved. Started with 80K UI increasing dosage about every 2 weeks. Husband is at 3 capsules/day. I just started 4 capsules/day this week. Hope this helps.
